Why take a French level test?

Knowing your CEFR level saves you time. Instead of guessing, you start learning at the right point: not so easy that you are bored, not so hard that you are lost. Our test checks the grammar and vocabulary that define each level, from present-tense basics at A1 to literary tenses and nuance at C1. It aligns with the DELF and DALF exams, so your result is a useful benchmark whether you are learning for travel, work, study or a diploma.

Frequently asked questions

How does the French level test work?

You answer 30 grammar and vocabulary questions that get harder as you go, grouped by CEFR level from A1 to C1. It takes about 6 minutes. Your estimated level appears instantly, with your score and a direct link to start the course at that level.

What is the CEFR?

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the international standard for describing language ability. It has six levels: A1 and A2 (basic), B1 and B2 (independent), C1 and C2 (proficient). DELF and DALF exams are built on the CEFR, so your result maps directly to those exams.

How accurate is the test?

It gives a reliable approximate placement based on grammar and vocabulary. It is a fast self-assessment, not an official certification. For a certified level you would sit a DELF or DALF exam, but this test is an excellent guide for choosing where to start learning.

Do I need an account to take it?

No. The test is completely free and needs no sign-up. You can optionally leave your email to receive your full result, and create a free account afterwards to start the course at your level.

Which levels does it cover?

The test places you anywhere from A1 (beginner) to C1 (advanced). If you pass every level, it reports C1+, meaning your French is near-native.
